Hamburg Commercial Bank supports “Rowing against Cancer” charity regattas in northern Germany

Hamburg, July 6, 2023 - Hamburg Commercial Bank (HCOB) is sponsoring the “Rowing against Cancer” regattas of the “Leben mit Krebs” (Living with Cancer) foundation and donating to the charity events in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Since 2005, rowing for a good cause has been organized in cooperation with local rowing clubs and oncological institutions throughout Germany. With a total of 28 boats, many of HCOB’s employees in Kiel and Hamburg also take part in the regatta.

“We are delighted to be able to support the 'Leben mit Krebs' foundation in its important work of helping cancer patients and their families and making their lives a little easier,” said Ian Banwell, Chief Executive Officer of Hamburg Commercial Bank. “I am particularly pleased that well over a hundred of the bank's employees will be actively participating in the charity regattas on Hamburg’s Lake Alster and Kiel’s Förde, thus personally showing their support for the charity.”

The “Leben mit Krebs” foundation supports projects that accompany therapy in order to improve the quality of life of cancer patients in the long term. The foundation's goals are many and varied, and include improving physical performance, alleviating disease- and therapy-related symptoms, and providing a forum for patients to share their experiences. It also aims to provide additional support, motivation, self-confidence, vitality and joie de vivre.

“We would like to express our sincere thanks to Hamburg Commercial Bank, whose sponsorship and generous donation make an important contribution to the fight against cancer in its home region,” said Volker Zaehle of the “Leben mit Krebs” foundation. “The fact that 28 boats with HCOB employees are starting – although many of them have never been in a rowing boat before – is just great and shows the enthusiasm for the good cause. We hope for good weather and lots of spectators!”

In Kiel, the regatta will take place on the Kiel Fjord “Förde” on 8th July 2023, while in Hamburg, the rowing will take place on Lake Alster on 3rd September 2023. The recipients of the donations are the Tumor Centre at the University Cancer Centre Hamburg (UCCH) and the Municipal Hospital Kiel GmbH. The regattas are organized by the HANSA e.V. rowing association in Hamburg and various rowing clubs in Kiel. The regatta boats are double fours plus coxswain; in Hamburg the distance covered is approximately 250 meters, in Kiel approximately 300 meters.

HCOB is supporting both events with a total of more than 40,000 Euro in sponsorship, the starting fee for the HCOB employee boats and an additional donation.
